WELCOME TO STOCKPORT ADVANCED MOTORISTS

The Stockport Advanced Motorists group is affiliated to IAM RoadSmart and has been providing IAM Roadsmart Advanced Driver Courses since 1978 in Stockport and the surrounding areas, with the aim of promoting better driving standards and improving safety on the roads.

Where possible we work with local companies and obtain funds to provide sponsored places for younger drivers (currently extended to those up to 35 years of age) who are statistically most likely to be involved in collisions on the road.

The IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driver Course is delivered by IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) Accredited Observers.  Your Observer is an unpaid volunteer* who is a member of an IAM Roadsmart affiliated group - in our case, Stockport Advanced Motorists.

The course covers all types of road situations including motorway driving, and helps you to develop their skills in anticipating and mitigating potentially hazardous situations while making good progress safely and efficiently.

We have seven IMI-Accredited Observers and one further candidate in training.

*It is in fact illegal in the UK for any person to accept any payment for any form of driver training, except for current DVSA-Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs), and their valid "ADI badge" must be displayed in the vehicle's windscreen. Some Observers are indeed ADIs but they are not paid for their voluntary work with IAM Roadsmart or affiliated groups.
